About Prince William Humane Society

August 15, 2012 – A new non-profit organization has been organized with the express purpose of promoting animal welfare to the homeless pets located in Prince William County, VA. We intend to accomplish this goal by advocating for the homeless animals, promoting adoption programs, providing financial assistance when possible and elevating public awareness. We support animal welfare organizations; including the Prince William County Animal Shelter and are working diligently to help them realize their possibilities and newly established goals. Under new direction over the past 2 years, the Prince William Animal Shelter has made amazing progress in improving both the living conditions at the facility and the care and treatment of adoptable pets in their care.  The Shelter staff is working assiduously on creating and implementing new programs designed to reduce the euthanasia rate and substantially increase the adoption rate with a goal of becoming a No Kill Facility by 2014. The Prince William Humane Society will assist the Shelter to accomplish these goals by functioning as the umbrella organization overseeing the fundraising, management and implementation of their various programs and funds dedicated to seeing the Prince William Animal Shelter into the 21st Century and creating a pet and people friendly environment that everyone can be proud of.

Who We Are:

First and foremost, we are animal lovers and protectors.  We do not have our own facility and we do not have adoptable pets. Instead, we advocate for the homeless animals in the care of ther Prince William County Animal Shelter by helping to provide a safe sanctuary, caring for their physical and emotional needs and striving to find them loving, lifetime homes.  We promote spaying and neutering of all pets in an effort to reduce the unwanted birth rate, eliminate euthanasia and achieve a No Kill facility by 2014.  We strive to educate the public on animal welfare issues and promote humane actions and attitudes towards all living things.

We are a volunteer organization made up of dedicated animal advocates and talented people who come together to combine our talents, skills and passion to accomplish magnificent transformations for the pets and pet lovers of Prince William County. We welcome all who are interested in aiding in this mission and are grateful for the time they donate to helping animals.

What is the difference between the Prince William County Animal Shelter and Prince William Humane Society?

The Prince William County Animal Shelter is a public animal control agency and a division of the Prince William County Police Dept,  legally charged with enforcing animal control laws and the laws protecting animals from abuse and neglect  They respond to citizens’ complaints about animals and impound stray animals. They investigate instances of animal abuse and cruelty and are supported entirely by government funds.  Therefore, if no public funds are available for their budget, they are forced to do without.

Prince William Humane Society is a private non-profit humane organization which receives no government funds and carries no legal authority. We receive our funding through private donations and possibly grants and bequests.  The role of a private humane organization is to provide assistance and resources to save the lives of healthy, treatable animals and to place these pets for adoption; to teach humans to treat animals with more compassion and understanding and to help people have happier, more fulfilling relationships with their pets.
