What is the difference between the Prince William County Animal Shelter and Prince William Humane Society?
The Prince William County Animal Shelter is a public animal control agency and a division of the Prince William County Police Dept, legally charged with enforcing animal control laws and the laws protecting animals from abuse and neglect They respond to citizens’ complaints about animals and impound stray animals. They investigate instances of animal abuse and cruelty and are supported entirely by government funds. Therefore, if no public funds are available for their budget, they are forced to do without.
Prince William Humane Society is a private non-profit humane organization which receives no government funds and carries no legal authority. We receive our funding through private donations, grants and bequests. The role of a private humane organization is to provide assistance and resources to save the lives of healthy, treatable animals and to place these pets for adoption; to teach humans to treat animals with more compassion and understanding and to help people have happier, more fulfilling relationships with their pets.
